From The Closet: Blink-182

blink182Not sure why I’ve had Blink-182 on the mind lately, but can you deny the catchy pop/punk tunes this band used to create?  I highly doubt it.  I remember when Enema of the State came out and I listen to it now just as much as I did back in ’99.  This album also marks the band’s jump from a buzz band to a band that packed arenas across the country.  I’ll admit that Dude Ranch provided a lot of success and mainstream popularity, but Enema took them to new levels.  Hell let’s just celebrate that this album is about to turn 10 years old and you still love it!  And let’s not forget that the band is getting back together!  I chose one of my favorite gems from the album “Aliens Exist” which features a slick drum intro from then new member Travis Barker.

From The Closet: Cake

cakeWe wanted to bring you some Cake this week to celebrate the band’s upcoming appearance at Stubbs on Tuesday the 28th (tickets are sold out btw).  Our from the closet jam, “Frank Sinatra”, has long been a favorite of mine.  It was also my first exposure to the band oh so many years ago and still sounds as fresh as ever.  You can hear it as the opening track on the band’s breakthrough 1996 album Fashion Nugget.

ATH Interviews: Pretty & Nice

prettyandniceWe brought Boston band Pretty & Nice to our SXSW showcase at Victory Grill and have been awaiting their return to Austin for a proper show.  We are in luck, because the band has a show lined up next week at Emo’s on Thursday (4/30).  We’ll remind you about that next week, but for now, check out an interview with band member  Jason Mendicino.  It’s quite insightful.  Follow the jump for full interview with Jason from Pretty & Nice.

FT5: Things To Buy On Record Store Day

0417top5coverThis Saturday, April 18th, is Record Store Day all across these United States. Sure, that seems like just another Saturday to most buyers, but the true record geek in all of us is already waiting in line. You see, on Record Store Day, you get to do two things: you get to support your favorite local indpendent record store and you get loads of limited edition stuff.  Me, personally, I can’t wait. I’ve already crafted a list so as to move through my favorite record store with ease in pursuit of such rarities that one can only dream.  The following is the list of the great things one can find at their local indpendent store, and we encourage you to do so, as this is the day the stores give back to us, and we give back to them.

Austin A2W: Wooden Birds

thewoodenbirdswooden_birds_02_lowresSeeing as how we haven’t run one of our Austin Artist to Watch features in quite a while, we thought we’d kick things off again with obvious A2W choice Wooden Birds.  This new Austin band has been getting a ton of local and national press coverage as of late, mostly for their mellow take on indie folk rock, and partly because the band is fronted by local music legend Andrew Kinney (American Analog Set).  After 6 long years in Brooklyn, Mr. Kinney moved back to Austin recently and decided it was just about time for a new music project.  We had the good fortune to speak to the man behind Wooden Birds and ask him some of those burning questions about his relocation and his music.  Follow the jump for full interview with Andrew Kinney.
